Optical Transport Field Specialist

System one is actively seeking an Optical Transport Field Specialist for a contract position.

Optical Transport Field Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Functions as a field network engineer, with minimal oversight, works in collaboration with Sr. Network Engineers and Network Architect(s)
  • Candidate will integrate and apply moderate to intermediate network concepts and approaches to unique fiber transport network design and engineering problems
  • On-site surveys will be performed by the individual to gather site specific data
  • May supervise staff on projects of medium to high complexity or serve as an intermediate technical resource providing knowledge and expertise
  • The Optical Transport Field Specialist will be responsible for conducting site surveys, configuration, installation, and Integration of telecom related equipment
  • Provide intermediate technical support, ability to create site survey reports, installation proposals, create and verify bill of materials
  • Update network design and close out drawings for Company Clients
  • Participates in project execution and technical delivery
  • Key Duties include:
  • Communicating directly with clients (sometimes non-technical clients) to identify current and future network and telecommunication needs
  • Collaborate with team of Network Engineers and Network Architects, lead and help to mentor network team members.
  • Assesses and understand how industry standards for models apply to network design and implementation best practices
  • May participates as technical lead on major projects and installation roll-outs
  • Responsible for developing and adhering to all Design Engineer quality processes and procedures
  • Work hand-in-hand with project management on technical issues
  • May direct production teams and coordinate multiple discipline activities
  • Supports continuous improvement of project and internal processes
  • Documentation and processes development
  • May validate work of lower level Field Network Engineers
  • Capable of optimizing day-to-day operational stability with the continual need to improve the service and deploy new services, processes and technologies
  • Support efforts related to utility Telecommunication systems
  • Understands, advocates, and supports Information Technology (IT) and Operation Technology (OT) strategies
  • Support the pursuit and development of current and new business opportunities
  • Ability to identify issues and provide feedback for best practices implementation

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to stand, bend, squat, walk, move, lift, carry equipment (>20lb) for the duration of the work day
  • Individual must be available to mobilize when scheduled and possess a valid driver’s license and pass a motor vehicle report background check
  • Ability to travel and stay overnight (up to a week duration) in Client’s Service territory as needed

Preferred Technical Competencies:

  • Solid understanding of AC/DC power principles, grounding, and industry cabling/wiring standards
  • Knowledge of Telecom and Data Network Design and engineering design principles, guidelines and standards
  • Intermediate experience in performing site surveys and evaluating Telecommunication Networks
  • Specific product knowledge and hands-on configuration and procurement experience on a variety of Network vendors
  • Proven experience with installation, commissioning, and integrating Telecom Network devices such as routers, switches, fiber and cable management, and rack power distribution
  • Ability to evaluate, refine, and implement network designs
  • Professional network documentation skills, including, but not limited to the development and updating of network drawings, rack layouts, cut sheets and various technical deliverables
  • Strong written communication skills especially pertaining to creating reports and installation surveys among other related deliverables
  • Knowledge of telecommunications technologies, trends and design
  • Experience with technical proposals
  • Knowledge of network power systems and requirements
  • Knowledge or experience with, but not limited to, configuration of Telecommunication equipment and networking test sets are desirable
  • Translating business requirements to technical network design specifications for implementation
  • Good understanding and interpretation of telecom principles and technologies

Optical Transport Field Specialist Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Network certifications preferred, but not required such as CCNA
  • 5+ years working as an installer of transport equipment or someone who participated in design of transport equipment that is willing to do field work
  • Typically, a minimum of 3+ years network related work experience
  • Utility experience preferred
  • Vendor experience preferred: Ciena, Nokia, GE (JMUX)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc), Visio
  • Solid understanding of AC/DC power principles, grounding, and industry cabling/wiring standards
  • Intermediate experience in performing site surveys and evaluating Telecommunication Networks
  • Basic knowledge of Telecommunication standards, systems, document control
  • Proven experience with installation, commissioning, and integrating Telecom Network devices such as routers, switches, fiber and cable management, and rack power distribution
  • Strong written communication skills especially pertaining to creating reports and installation surveys among other related deliverables
  • Knowledge or experience with, but not limited to, configuration of Telecommunication equipment and networking test sets are desirable

  • Attend safety training and follow Company safety standards
  • Self-motivated and ability to self-manage
  • Candidate must be a self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision
  • Should be well versed with change management, maintenance window activities and rollback procedures as they relate to installation and migration strategies
  • Up to 75% around upstate (Central/Northern NY) travel - some overnight travel may be required
  • Will be provided a rental car if driving over a certain number of miles in a day

Duration: Contract

Location: Buffalo, NY

Pay Rate : $32.25  - $34.00/hr.
